Volunteers in Fairfield Area needed to help compile bird-banding and other data.
Long-time bird banding programs at Connecticut Audubon Society Centers and other bird inventory efforts have led to the accumulation of large amounts of valuable information on the presence of bird species across the state. Some of this information is many decades old and provides invaluable “snapshots in time” that allow us to compare historic bird diversity and density with current numbers, and determine whether species are declining or not.
Our Science and Conservation staff is currently in the process of compiling and analyzing this data, but it is slow-going because most of the information is in notebooks, old banding sheets and other paper formats. To properly analyze the information, we need to have all data in a digital format. If you're interested in learning more about birds in CT, have time available and want to help our conservation efforts, we'd like to hear from you! The work mostly involves entry of paper data into a computer, so basic computer skills are needed; a working knowledge of Microsoft Excel is desirable but training will be provided. Depending on your interest and skill level, you may also do data analysis. If you are interested or have questions, please contact CAS Conservation Biologist Twan Leenders at 203-259-6305 ext. 114 or tleenders@ctaudubon.org.
