Using Fire to Improve Habitat at Stratford Point
You know it’s a good day when a Bald Eagle flies directly overhead, clearly visible to the naked eye, and the sighting is not even the most interesting thing you’ve witnessed that day.
The eagle flew over us at Stratford Point yesterday but took second place to the awesome brush fire the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection lit – and perfectly controlled – as part of our long-range habitat restoration plan there.
The fire burned about 20 acres of grassland, and will prepare the site for native grasses and other plants that will re-vegetate the Point, thereby vastly improving its habitat value.
We’re convinced that our work at Stratford Point constitutes the most comprehensive ecological restoration project currently being carried out on Long Island Sound. Add to that the amazing spectacle of the fire itself, and we couldn’t resist telling you about it.
You can read more about it elsewhere on our website (click here). The controlled fire was also covered by the Connecticut Post, Stratford Patch and News 12. – Tom Andersen, Director of Communications and Community Outreach
