Land Orienteering Workshop

Saturday, October 26 from  10:30 – 12:30PM

If you have ever wanted to learn how to use a compass and to navigate through the woods using only a map, then you’ll have a rewarding experience during this morning workshop.  Plus, you’ll have an opportunity to explore the beautiful Larsen Sanctuary with its varied terrain and numerous ecosystems.

 This workshop is for beginners who want to learn the basics of land orienteering.  Participants will learn the mechanics of compass work combined with fun filled activities.

 The workshop will cover:

  • Compass use (including azimuths)
  • Practice Compass Course
  • Pace Counting and getting  your own personal pace count
  • A practice orienteering course 

 The course is lead by Evan Sweeney, trained by the New York Search and Rescue Rangers through DEC.  Space is limited, pre-registration is required. The fee is $10 per person.  Dress in layers and bring some way to carry water (i.e. canteen or camelback) good shoes or boots to hike up and down trails, sunscreen and rain gear.  Bring your own compass if you have one you want to use.  For adults and children 13 years and older.  For more information or to register, call 203-259-6305 x 109.
