Andy & Sandy Visit the “Osprey Garden” in Old Saybrook
June 4, 2020 — The Osprey population in Connecticut and elsewhere is thriving. That didn’t happen by accident. DDT was banned. Waterways were cleaned up so fish could return. And platforms were erected all along the coast to give these birds places to nest.
It worked. Last summer there were 501 active nests in the state. Connecticut Audubon is using your donations to support projects like Osprey Nation and to help monitor nests, like those in the video below, in Old Saybrook. EcoTravel Director Andy Griswold likes to call this area the Osprey Garden. He visits it regularly with Sandy Sanstrom, winner of our Dave Engelman Volunteer Benchmark Award in 2016, to check on the eggs (which will be hatching momentarily) and clear away debris.
This is a really interesting look at how your support is making a difference. Thank you!
