In hot weather, fresh water for the birds in your backyard is essential

July 16, 2024 — Birds need cool water on hot days as much as you do. Do them a favor by giving them some in your backyard.

They will drink it, splash in it, and bathe in it. Water helps regulate birds’ body temperature and keeps them hydrated — especially in extreme heat.

Here’s why it’s important and some Connecticut Audubon tips:

  • Essential for Survival: Water is crucial for birds’ survival, and natural sources may dry up during hot weather.
  • Cooling Mechanism: Bathing helps birds cool down by wetting their feathers and helping them cool off through evaporation.
  • Attracting Birds: Providing water can attract a variety of birds to your yard, which will make your  birdwatching experience that much better.

Tips for Providing Water:

  • Cleanliness: Change the water daily to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and algae.
  • Shallow Dishes: Use shallow dishes or bird baths — most birds prefer not to wade into deep water.
  • Placement: Place the water source in a shaded area, out of direct sunlight, to keep it cooler and prevent evaporation.
  • Multiple Sources: If you can, offer multiple water sources at different heights and locations to cater to various bird species.
  • Moving Water: Consider adding a dripper, mister, or fountain. The sight and sound of moving water will bring in more birds.
  • Places to hide: If you can, locate the water near cover such as thick shrubbery to avoid unnecessary exposure to predators.

By providing fresh water, you’re helping birds beat the heat and contributing to their well-being.
