Ensworth Charitable Foundation funds East Hartford Public Schools’ Participation in Science in Nature Education Program
June 1, 2019 – All students in grades kindergarten and 1 from the East Hartford Public Schools district will participate in the Connecticut Audubon Society’s award-winning Science in Nature Education Program, thanks to a generous $20,0000 grant from the Ensworth Charitable Foundation, Bank of America, N.A., Trustee.
This project will serve 44 classrooms of students and their teachers throughout the 2019-2020 academic year. Students will study a series of topics in their East Hartford school classrooms, and then get to see these concepts come to life during a hands-on experience in Glastonbury’s 49-acre Earle Park. Students will use a variety of science tools and technologies under the guidance of trained teacher-naturalists, and take part in an outdoor component for each lesson, where they are responsible for intensive qualitative and quantitative data collection. Already an entrenched science program in the upper grades, this is the first time that Science in Nature has been introduced to the kindergarten and grade 1 levels in East Hartford.
Participating schools include Anna E. Norris, Franklin H. Mayberry, Gov. William Pitkin, John A. Langford, Joseph O. Goodwin, Robert J. O’Brien, Silver Lane, and Thomas S. O’Connell elementary schools.
“The East Hartford Public Schools district was excited to introduce the concepts of Science in Nature earlier into their students’ education,” said Kate Reamer, director of the Center at Glastonbury. “We are thrilled to have Ensworth Charitable Foundation as a partner in this educational experience for our local students.”
Connecticut Audubon Society’s mission is to conserve Connecticut’s environment through science-based education and advocacy focused on the state’s bird populations and their habitats. Connecticut Audubon Society established Science in Nature in 2012 to help introduce Connecticut students to basic concepts in outdoor conservation science. It is based on current state and national science standards. More than 70,000 students from across the state have participated at Connecticut Audubon Society’s centers and at their schools.
The Ensworth Charitable Foundation supports and promotes educational, cultural, human services, religious, and health, art and cultural programs care programming for under-served populations, particularly in Hartford and the contiguous neighboring communities.
