June 5, 2020 — We at the Connecticut Audubon Society add our voices to the rising calls for change in our country. Nature knows no racial boundaries. It is our vision that everyone in our diverse population appreciate the value of the natural world and have access to it. Any possibility that the birding community could feel isolated from racism was shattered last week when Christian Cooper, a birder who happened to be black, was subjected to overt racism while searching for a Mourning Warbler in Central Park.

One concrete way that Connecticut Audubon is and will continue to be proactive is through our mission of advocacy for environmental issues that affect all people. Among our top priorities are clean air, clean water, and climate change – issues that are of particular importance to minority and economically challenged communities that have often been disproportionately affected by environmental degradation.

Our Science in Nature programming, which has reached 70,000 students, was designed to reach under-served, disadvantaged communities.  Our organization is committed to engage, offer educational opportunities, and advocate for the diverse population of Connecticut. 

We are seeking to diversify the audience we serve as well as our staff and board.  We strive for continual improvement, and are firmly committed to achieving our goal.  

The path to equality begins with community.  We must talk to each other, listen to each other with open hearts. The Board of Directors and staff of the Connecticut Audubon Society pledge to continue to seek out ways in which we can begin the conversation and be a part of the solution.
