 Red-breasted Nuthatch (photo by Scott Kruitbosch) | If you’re birding in Connecticut’s Quiet Corner, look for them at West Thompson Lake in Windham, These cute squeak toy-sounding birds are moving south in large numbers. Also check your feeders, especially if you have evergreens in your yard. | Suggested by Matt Bell |
 Common Grackle (photo by Patrick Comins) | Recently listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List of global species of conservation concern, look for them anywhere. They’re still relatively abundant but population has dropped by 50% since 1970. They are also beautiful and underappreciated bird. In the right light their purple and blue iridescence is striking. With breeding season over, they’re starting to gather in flocks.
