What does Staten Island have that Connecticut doesn’t? For one thing, a 2,000-acre grassland that has been colonized by scores of Grasshopper Sparrows, Sedge Wrens, Savannah Sparrows, and Eastern Meadowlarks.

The grassland is Freshkills park — the present home of those vulnerable grassland species and the former home of the world’s largest garbage dump.

It’s also the domain of Shannon Curley, Ph.D., and Jose Ramirez-Garofalo, a Ph.D. student, who have been studying the grassland birds there for six years. Join them on Zoom to hear about their work and about what Connecticut can learn from the success at Freshkills.
