Integrating Science and Art: Avian, Marine, and Nature Subject Matter

In this series we will cover the origins of printmaking by examining the art history of printmaking in Japan and China. This will include learning about how Japanese fishermen and conservationists of the 1800’s recorded marine specimens. This process of integrating Science and Art is referred to as Gyotaku, and still assists conservationists today.

We will also learn about original woodcuts and block printing, handmade inks and papers, and tools and techniques. We will be creating our own Gyotaku, and block prints, using some easier, kinder, and safer materials. We will also be practicing our drawing skills and using watercolor, as we explore watercolor techniques and tools with experimentation exercises.

As the weather warms and weather permits, we will be studying nature for inspiration on the grounds of Audubon Coastal, Milford, CT. We may also look to the beach and wetlands for inspiration there. This may include viewing the soothing array of wild birds around the lovely rock waterfall feature, the gardens, and noting the many species of grasses and trees which support wildlife there. This series of 8 classes will all be accomplished step by step, with your Art Education teacher Jeanne Board-Fayumi.

Please be prepared to bring a mask if need be for your health, a roll of white paper towels, a smock or alike, and a couple pairs of disposable gloves for the printmaking process, which uses inks/paints. Jeanne will tell you exactly which classes you will need these for as classes evolve.
