Nature journaling nurtures creativity and ecological awareness. It improves focus and observation skills and can promote a sense of calm and clarity. Join us for a nature journaling workshop and explore the natural world through the lens of local naturalist and writer Edwin Way Teale. The workshop will start with a look at examples from Teale’s work, providing inspiration and insight into his observational and scientific approach to nature writing. Then we'll take a short hike around Trail Wood, where participants will make their own observations, take notes, and sketch or photograph the sights they encounter. Conclude by sharing observations, reflecting on the varied ways each of us experiences and documents “Where We Live” – the theme of the 2024-25 Big Read. Register by calling 860-928-4948 or emailing trailwood@ctaudubon.org. Fee: $10 CAS members and ECSU students; $20 non-members.

Join Katherine Hauswirth, a naturalist and writer, as she discusses nature journaling to increase awareness and preserve experiences. She will also cover some history of this practice, especially in Connecticut and New England, and how it ties in with citizen science and phenology – the recording of observations across the seasons. The Morning Light, the Lily White: Daily Dips into Nature and Spirit is Katherine’s most recent book. It contains short essays about “goings-on” in the natural world. A former artist-in-residence at Edwin Way Teale’s Trail Wood in Hampton, Katherine has made daily observations across the calendar year, as Edwin did in his book, A Walk Through the Year. You’ll want Katherine’s book in hand to start 2025. Registration appreciated, but not required. Free admission.
