Invasive Plant Management

Staff and volunteers work together at Deer Pond Farm to remove invasive plants and care for the land.

Volunteers tackle key invasive plants in selected areas, learning about local plant life and how hands-on management supports healthy habitats.

Invasive plants are one of the biggest threats to the health, productivity, and biodiversity of our landscape. Volunteers work together with Deer Pond Farm staff to address priority invasive species in targeted locations. Strength in numbers works to our advantage in restoring healthy habitats to our forests and meadows. Managing invasive species is rarely completed in one season; it requires active monitoring, maintenance, and removal of species, and most importantly, habitat restoration.

Our Sanctuary Manager also works with professional contractors, foresters and our volunteers to execute our invasive management strategies and restoration plans. Each species (and season) requires different treatments for most effective eradication. Timing and execution are crucial in the effective management of these prolific plants.

We report our invasive treatment data to the Connecticut Invasive Plant Working Group (CIPWG) and regularly attend meetings to learn about the most recent scientific findings and most safe and effective ways to treat invasive plants and organisms. The Connecticut Land Conservation Council meetings also provide staff with new insight, techniques, and opportunities to collaborate with scientists, land managers, and other environmental organizations.
