Shorebird Monitoring

The Shorebird Monitoring program trains and coordinates volunteer stewards to work with state and federal agencies to monitor nesting coastal birds in Connecticut and educate the public, focusing on Piping Plovers, American Oystercatchers, and Least Terns.

This project is conducted in through the Audubon Alliance for Coastal Waterbirds and is a collaboration between the Connecticut Audubon Society, Audubon Connecticut, CT DEEP, US Fish & Wildlife Service, and The Nature Conservancy, as well as local municipalities.

The RTP Estuary Center helps monitor and coordinate volunteers for the east end of the state, specifically Griswold Point, Bluff Point State Park, Waterford Town Beach, and Harkness State Park. We also provide educational walks and presentations about nesting and migrating
shorebirds throughout Southeastern Connecticut.
