Habitat Enhancement at Deer Pond Farm

Habitat Enhancement Projects support birds by improving and restoring the natural habitats they rely on for nesting, feeding, and migration.

Efforts such as planting native vegetation and managing invasive species help create safer, more abundant spaces for a wide variety of bird species to thrive year-round.

Habitat Enhancement Efforts at Deer Pond Farm

Forestry

Deer Pond Farm encompasses 850 acres, roughly half in Sherman, Connecticut, and half in Pawling, New York. About 75 percent of the total property is mixed deciduous forest.

Pollinator Garden Areas

The Deer Pond Farm pollinator garden areas enhance habitat for birds and pollinators while creating a welcoming, beautiful space for visitors. It highlights the benefits of native plants and offers year-round opportunities to observe blooms, birds, and other pollinators.

Invasive Plant Management

Invasive species are non-native plants and animals that reproduce rapidly and have negative impacts on the healthy biodiversity of native plants and animals. Management involves assessment, planning and action to minimize the harm.

Meadow Management

Deer Pond Farm manages our meadows in rotations, called alternate meadow management. This allows us to mow and sow seeds in sections of meadows in increments, so overwintering bees and bugs have shelter in un-mowed areas, while maintaining the herbaceous cover and preventing woody stemmed plants from invading in other meadow habitat.
