Deer Pond Farm includes a network of 15 miles of trails. The sanctuary is open year-round, seven days a week, from dawn to dusk. All trails are accessible from the visitor parking lot at 57 Wakeman Hill Road, Sherman, CT.
Habitat
Deer Pond Farm encompasses upland hardwood forest, forested wetlands, meadows and early successional shrublands. There are historic stone walls, seasonal vernal pools, and two ponds with associated wetland habitat. Together, these provide habitat for birds of the forest and fields, and for mammals, amphibians, pollinators, and other wildlife adapted to woodland, wetland, and open-field environments. About 650 of its 850 acres are upland forest; 125 acres are forested wetlands; and 59 acres are meadow.
About Our Center
Inside our center, rotating art exhibits feature work inspired by the natural world, highlighting the connection between conservation and creativity. Visitors can also find information about programs, events, and ways to get involved.
The Teaching Terrace offers an outdoor space for environmental education programs and a comfortable place to pause and take in the surrounding landscape.
Through guided walks, educational programs, and community events, Deer Pond Farm encourages an understanding of local wildlife and the importance of protecting open space—while providing a welcoming setting to enjoy the outdoors.
About Our Sanctuary
Deer Pond Farm began with an original 150-acre property. Over time, the Wriston family thoughtfully acquired additional parcels, piece by piece, expanding the preserve into the 850-acre sanctuary it is today.
This steady growth created a large, contiguous landscape of protected forest, meadow, and wetland habitats -- half in Sherman, CT and half in Pawling, NY. The careful expansion of the property has allowed for greater ecological diversity, expanded trail access, and long-term land protection that benefits both wildlife and the surrounding community.
Today, Deer Pond Farm stands as a testament to the vision and commitment behind its preservation—providing space for conservation, environmental education, and public enjoyment of the natural world.
Wildlife
Over 155 species of birds have been documented here, including forest birds such as Broad-winged Hawk, Scarlet Tanager, and Pileated Woodpecker, and early successional specialists such as American Woodcock, Eastern Towhee, and Chestnut-sided Warbler. There are two eBird hotspot locations: Deer Pond Farm (CT Audubon) and Deer Pond Farm, CT Audubon (Dutchess Co.). Thank you for reporting your bird observations.
Mammals include bobcat, coyote, several bat species, fisher and long-tailed weasel, beaver, black bear and, of course, deer.
Numerous amphibian species breed in its 11 vernal pools, including wood frogs, spring peepers, and spotted salamanders. Two turtle and four snake species have been confirmed.
