Lieutenant River Habitat and Riparian Zone Protection and Restoration Project

Located along the edge of the RTP Estuary Center Sanctuary, this project will strengthen and restore critical coastal habitat while enhancing the sanctuary’s climate resilience. The site lies within the CT National Estuarine Research Reserve boundary and is designated a “wetlands of international importance” by the Ramsar Convention.

It is recognized as a vital habitat for migratory birds and appreciated for its diverse, undisturbed ecosystems. The area faces increased pressures from extreme storms, flooding, and drought.

Key goals of the project include conserving marine and wildlife habitat, reducing erosion through nature-based solutions like living shorelines, and fostering community engagement through education, outreach, and stewardship opportunities. Installation of an educational dock will help support these community engagement and stewardship efforts.
