Long Island Sound Estuarine Resiliency Project

Utilizing living shoreline elements including Reef Balls™, kelp mats, and seagrass, this project will enhance coastal resilience and reduce erosion of the Griswold Point Barrier in Old Lyme, CT. Griswold Point, a barrier beach located where the mouth of the Connecticut River meets Long Island Sound, is altered by extreme weather events and sea level rise caused by climate change.

The addition of breakwater-style Reef Balls™, along with restoring seagrass and oyster habitat, will help to mitigate erosion by reducing wave energy and buffering the shoreline. Ongoing changes to the coastline, combined with declines in eelgrass and oyster populations, demonstrates the need to strengthen coastal resilience and restore natural filter populations that support widespread ecosystem health.
